Analysis of the Importance of Role of the Occupational Therapist in the Dementia Care Center and Educational Needs: Focused on the Students Majoring in Occupational Therapy

Abstract
Objective : The purpose of this study is to analysis of the importance of role of the occupational therapist in
the dementia care center and educational needs of students in the department of occupational therapy.

Methods : From September 2019 to January 2020, 400 students majoring in occupational therapy were surveyed at universities located in the Gyeongsang, Joongbu and Jeonra areas. With the exception of 12 missing responses, 388 questionnaires were used for data analysis.

Results : First, students majoring in occupational therapy had a normal level of awareness about the function
of the dementia care center and role of the occupational therapist in the dementia care center and more than 80 percent of all students were willing to work at a dementia care center. Second, students recognized that role of the occupational therapist was important at the dementia care center, and role of the occupational therapist was most important in early screening of dementia and preventive management project. Third, students were all aware of the need for education on the overall function of the dementia care center, role of the occupational therapist, and clinical practice at the dementia care center. Fourth, there were significant differences in the importance of role of the occupational therapist in the dementia care center and educational needs about overall function of the dementia care center and role of the occupational therapist in the dementia care center according to age, grade and region among the general characteristics. Fifth, the importance of role of the occupational therapist and the educational needs for clinical practice were significantly high when there was a clinical practice experience at the dementia care center. Sixth, there was a significant difference in the importance of role of the occupational therapist and educational needs about overall function of the dementia care center and clinical practice at the dementia care center, depending on the level of awareness of the function of the dementia care center, job of the occupational therapist in the dementia care center and level of interest in the occupational therapist in the dementia care center.

Conclusion : Students majoring in occupational therapy valued the role of the occupational therapist in the
dementia care center and found that there was a high demand for education related to the dementia care center. These findings could used as a useful basis for activating the community based occupational therapy and enhancing the efficiency of education.
